All Monarch domestic softeners are electric metered units. Unlike Harvey and Kinetico's non-electric designs, Monarch units require a 240V socket nearby and use an electronic control head to monitor water usage and trigger regeneration when the resin capacity is approaching exhaustion.
Demand-initiated (metered) regeneration is more efficient than timer-based alternatives — the softener only regenerates when it needs to, rather than on a fixed schedule regardless of actual water use. The practical result is lower salt consumption per month compared to older timer-based systems.
The electrical requirement is a minor consideration during installation — a socket near the softener location is needed — but does mean the unit will not operate during a power cut.
