Why Kinetico is easier to install

Three reasons the non-electric design simplifies the job.

1

No power socket needed

Unlike electric softeners, Kinetico does not need a mains plug. This opens up install locations that would otherwise be impossible: under sinks with no nearby socket, garages, airing cupboards.

2

No programming or timer setup

Electric models need the timer configured to your household’s schedule. Kinetico is demand-driven — it calibrates itself based on actual water usage. The installer sets the hardness level and it handles the rest.

3

Simpler plumbing

Without a separate electrical connection to route, the installer focuses solely on the water and waste connections. This typically shaves 30–60 minutes off the install time compared to electric models.

What to expect on install day

Kinetico installations are quick because the units are designed to be plumber-friendly. Here is what happens, start to finish.

1

Pre-install survey

Your Kinetico Authorised Dealer visits first to assess your plumbing and confirm the fitting location. This visit is what protects your 10-year parts warranty — DIY or non-authorised installs can void it.

2

Water off, fitting kit fitted

Your mains water is turned off at the stop cock. The installer fits the bypass valve and connection kit to your rising main — usually a 22 mm or 28 mm pipe depending on your boiler setup.

3

Softener positioned and connected

The unit is placed in your chosen spot (under-sink for Compact, utility room for Premier Maxi). Inlet, outlet, and drain are connected. No power socket is needed — Kinetico runs entirely off the moving water.

4

First regeneration and salt loading

The installer commissions the unit, runs a regeneration cycle, and loads the first batch of salt — block salt for the Compact, tablet or block for the larger units. You will see soft water at the taps within an hour.

5

Walkthrough and paperwork

Your installer shows you the salt fill window, the bypass lever, and how to read the meter dial. You will get a commissioning certificate — keep this safe; it is what activates your 10-year warranty.

6

Typical timeline

Around 2 to 4 hours total. Compact units in straightforward kitchens go fast. Maxi units in older homes with awkward pipework, or where the stop cock is far from the install location, take longer.

Before the dealer arrives: clear access to your stop cock, decide on the install spot (and measure it — including door clearance for delivery), and check whether you need a drain nearby. Most installers can suggest an alternative location on the day if your first choice is not viable.

Kinetico installation questions

What people ask about fitting a Kinetico.

Can any plumber install a Kinetico?

Kinetico recommends using an authorised dealer for installation to keep the warranty valid. Our network includes Kinetico-authorised installers. Availability depends on your postcode area.

Does Kinetico installation cost more than other brands?

No. The installation process is actually simpler because there is no electrical work. Expect £200–£500, the same range as other brands.

What if I want to move the Kinetico later?

Relocating a water softener is possible but involves disconnecting and reconnecting the plumbing. Budget £150–£300 for a professional relocation. The unit itself is not damaged by being moved.

Do I need a drain near the install location?

Yes. The unit needs a drain connection for the regeneration cycle. A standard kitchen waste, washing machine standpipe, or external gully all work. If there is no drain within reach, your installer can sometimes run a small drain pipe, but it adds time and cost.

Does Kinetico installation need a power socket?

No. The entire Premier range is non-electric and powered by the kinetic energy of moving water. This makes the install simpler, removes any electrical safety considerations, and means zero electricity running cost over the unit’s lifetime.

What happens to my water pressure after install?

You should not notice a meaningful drop. Kinetico’s Pressure-Save Regeneration means pressure stays consistent even during regeneration cycles. If you do notice a drop, contact your installer — it usually points to an incorrectly sized fitting kit, not a fault with the softener.
