What your installer needs

Four plumbing requirements for a standard installation.

1

Access to the rising main

The cold water mains inlet pipe — usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility cupboard. The softener connects here so all water entering the house passes through it.

2

A nearby drain

For the waste water produced during the regeneration cycle. Usually the kitchen sink waste pipe or a nearby external drain. If no drain is close, the installer routes a new waste pipe.

3

Space for a bypass valve

A bypass valve lets you isolate the softener for maintenance or if it needs servicing. It is fitted inline between the mains and the softener. Standard on all professional installs.

4

Adequate pipe sizing

Most UK homes have 15mm or 22mm copper mains pipes. The softener connections must match. Your installer checks this during the site survey and brings the right fittings.

The plumbing your installer will check

Six technical checks that determine whether a softener can be fitted as quoted — or whether you need extra work first.

1. Rising main location and condition

The pipe that brings mains water into your home. Usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes in the cellar, garage, or hallway. The installer needs clear access and a section to cut into. Old galvanised steel pipework may need to be replaced first.

2. Pipe diameter (15, 22, or 28 mm)

Most modern UK homes are 22 mm on the rising main. 15 mm is found in older homes and is borderline for some Maxi-class units. 28 mm is found in large homes with mega-flow systems. The fitting kit must match — ask the installer which they will use.

3. Working stop cock

Must turn off cleanly and hold pressure. Seized stop cocks are common in older homes — the installer may need to replace it before the softener can be safely fitted. Budget £40–£100 for stop-cock replacement work.

4. Drain within reach

The unit discharges during regeneration. A standard kitchen waste, washing machine standpipe, or external gully all work. The drain run should be under 2 m horizontal and below the unit (gravity drainage). If you need a pumped drain, it adds cost.

5. Pressure and flow check

The installer will check your mains pressure (typically 1–6 bar in UK homes) and dynamic flow rate. Low pressure may need a pressure-boosting valve; very high pressure (over 5 bar) may need a pressure-reducing valve to protect the softener.

6. Drinking water tap consideration

Most UK installs leave the kitchen cold tap on hard water for drinking — this is a common preference because softened water has a higher sodium content. Your installer will fit a separate take-off before the softener. Confirm this in the quote.

Before the install visit: find your stop cock and confirm it turns easily. Photograph the rising main and any nearby drain. Decide whether you want the kitchen cold tap left on hard water or softened. These three things help your installer give a tighter, more accurate quote.

Plumbing questions

Technical questions about the plumbing side.

Do I need to upgrade my pipes?

Rarely. Most UK homes already have suitable 15mm or 22mm copper pipework. If your home has older lead pipes, the installer may recommend upgrading the section near the softener — but this is uncommon.

What is a bypass valve and why do I need one?

A bypass valve lets you switch the water supply around the softener without disconnecting it. Useful for servicing, salt changes, or if the softener needs repair. It is a standard part of any professional installation.

Can a water softener work with a combi boiler?

Yes. Water softeners are compatible with all UK boiler types including combi, system, and conventional. The softener sits on the mains before the boiler, so all hot and cold water is softened.

Will my drinking water still be hard?

It can be. Most UK installs leave the kitchen cold tap on hard water as the drinking tap, fitting a separate take-off before the softener. This is a preference, not a requirement — softened water is safe to drink for most people but has higher sodium content, which can matter for those on low-sodium diets or for infant formula.

What if I have lead pipes in my house?

Lead pipework should be replaced regardless of the softener install — it is a health issue. If you have lead on the rising main, the installer will usually replace the section being worked on as part of the job. Older properties built before 1970 are the most likely to still have lead pipework.

Do I need a non-return valve or check valve?

Some UK water companies require one on installs that include any equipment connected to mains. The installer will know your local water board’s rules and include it in the fitting kit if needed. This is included in standard install pricing.
