What affects the price

Four factors determine where your install sits in the £200–£500 range.

1

Distance from the rising main

Under-sink installs (closest to the mains) are cheapest. Garage or utility room installs need longer pipe runs, adding £50–£150.

2

Plumbing complexity

Standard copper pipework with easy access: lower end. Concealed pipes, concrete floors, or plastic push-fit conversions push the price up.

3

Waste pipe routing

The softener needs a drain for regeneration waste water. If the nearest drain is far from the install location, additional pipework is needed.

4

Additional work

Fitting a separate hard water drinking tap, relocating the stopcock, or installing a new power socket (for electric models) all add to the bill.

Where the £200–£500 actually goes

Six line items that make up the typical UK install cost, and where each one can move up or down.

Labour (2–4 hours)

The biggest single component — typically £120–£250 depending on installer rates and complexity. London and the South East sit at the top end; the Midlands and North often come in £30–£60 lower for the same job.

Fitting kit and pipework

A standard 22 mm fitting kit (bypass valve, connection hoses, drain hose) is around £40–£80. Older homes on 15 mm or 28 mm pipework need a different kit, adding £20–£50. Most installers include this in the headline price.

Stop-cock work

If your stop cock is seized, broken, or in an awkward spot, expect £40–£100 of additional work. Knowing where yours is and whether it turns easily before the quote visit can save surprise on the day.

Drain run

If there is no drain within reach of your install spot, the installer may need to run a small pipe to the nearest waste — adding £30–£80. Picking a spot near an existing waste (washing machine standpipe, kitchen sink) avoids this entirely.

Commissioning and first salt fill

Setting hardness, running first regeneration, loading the initial bag of salt — usually rolled into the labour charge. Some installers include the first month of salt; others charge for it separately. Worth asking.

VAT and disposal

All prices on UK installer quotes should be inclusive of VAT (most installers are VAT-registered for this kind of work). If you are replacing an old softener, ask whether the installer takes it away — some include this, others charge a £25–£50 disposal fee.

The cheapest quote is rarely the best deal. A quote that looks £100 lower than the others often excludes the fitting kit, charges for salt and commissioning separately, or has a higher call-out fee built into the warranty period. Always compare on the itemised line items, not the headline.

Installation cost questions

What people ask about installation pricing.

Is the installation cost included in the unit price?

Sometimes. Some installers quote a bundled price (unit + install). Others quote them separately. Always ask for a written breakdown so you can compare fairly.

Can I reduce the installation cost?

The main way to reduce cost is to choose an under-sink location close to the rising main. Clearing the area before the installer arrives saves time. Beyond that, the price is driven by plumbing complexity.

Are there any hidden costs?

A reputable installer will give you a fixed written quote with no surprises. Watch out for quotes that say “from £200” without specifying what is included. Our installers provide full breakdowns.

Do regional prices vary much across the UK?

Yes. London and the South East are typically £30–£60 higher than the same job in the Midlands or North — mostly down to installer labour rates. Rural areas where the installer has to travel can also push the labour line up.

What happens if the installer hits a problem mid-job?

A good installer will stop, explain the problem (seized stop cock, hidden lead pipework, incompatible existing valve) and give you a revised price before continuing. They should not invoice for extras you have not agreed to. Confirm this protocol in writing before they start.

Is removal of an old softener included?

Sometimes yes, sometimes a £25–£50 disposal fee. If you have an old electric softener with a salt brine tank to drain, the disposal job is bigger than a simple non-electric unit. Ask up front so you can decide whether to skip the disposal and dispose of it yourself.
