Water Softener Installation: What to Expect on the Day

Before the engineer arrives, confirm you have: a clear, accessible area at the installation location (usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility room); the water supply turned off at the stopcock; and a 240V electrical socket within reach of the installation point if the unit requires power.

For non-electric systems (Harvey, Kinetico), no socket is needed for the softening mechanism, though a power connection may still be needed for a nearby drinking water filter if one is being installed simultaneously. Confirm power requirements with the engineer when booking.

A typical installation follows this sequence:

1. The engineer assesses the installation location, confirms pipe routes, and checks inlet pressure with a gauge
2. The cold mains feed is isolated and a section of pipe is cut to insert the softener connections
3. Inlet and outlet connections are made to the softener — usually compression or push-fit fittings, not soldered unless the plumber prefers it
4. A bypass valve assembly is installed — this allows the softener to be isolated for servicing without cutting off the water supply
5. A separate unsoftened cold feed is maintained for the drinking tap
6. The brine drain line is connected to the waste — usually the kitchen sink waste or a nearby standpipe
7. The salt is loaded and the unit is commissioned — programmed with the local water hardness and household usage settings
8. A test run is performed to confirm correct regeneration, brine draw, and soft water output

A straightforward installation in an accessible location — under a kitchen sink with a nearby waste connection — typically takes two to three hours. More complex installations involving longer pipe runs, utility rooms with awkward access, or boiler rooms with tight spaces may take three to four hours.

The engineer should tidy up completely after finishing, removing all packaging and swarf from any pipe cutting. The installation area should be left clean and the unit ready to use.

For the first day or two after installation, the water may appear slightly discoloured or taste slightly different as the resin bed settles. This is normal and harmless. Run the taps for a few minutes if you notice this.

Many engineers recommend running the unit through one or two additional regeneration cycles in the first week to ensure the resin is fully activated. Your installer should advise on this as part of the commissioning.

You will not notice soft water immediately from the cold drinking tap if it is connected to the unsoftened supply — this is correct. Soft water should be coming from all hot outlets and the non-drinking cold outlets within hours of the first regeneration cycle completing.

Test the output within a day of installation using a water hardness test strip — these cost a few pounds from hardware stores or online. A reading from the soft water outlets of below 50 ppm (ideally below 20 ppm) confirms the softener is working. Compare with a reading from the unsoftened drinking tap to confirm the test strip is working and to see the contrast.

Within a week you will start to notice the household effects: soap lathering more readily, shower screens staying cleaner, and the kettle showing no new scale formation.
