Quick sizing guide

Match your home to the right capacity. Water hardness and household size are the two key variables.

1–2 bathrooms

Soft–moderate hardness

Entry-level single-tank unit. Compact enough for under-sink. Regenerates every few days. Suits flats and smaller terraced homes.

3–4 bathrooms

Hard water (200–300ppm)

Mid-range block salt or twin-tank unit. Handles peak morning demand. Most popular size for UK semi-detached and detached homes.

5+ bathrooms

Very hard water (300ppm+)

Premium high-capacity or commercial-grade unit. Twin-tank recommended for continuous soft water. Suits large detached homes.

3 factors that affect your sizing

Beyond bathrooms and hardness, these three details fine-tune the recommendation.

1

Number of people in the household

More people = more water used daily. A family of 5 uses roughly twice what a couple does. The softener’s daily capacity must keep up.

2

Peak usage patterns

If everyone showers between 7–8am, you need a unit that delivers high flow during that window. Twin-tank models handle peaks better.

3

Future-proofing

Planning an extension, loft conversion, or extra bathroom? Size for the house you’re building, not the one you have today.

Sizing questions

Common questions about choosing the right size.

How do I work out what size water softener I need?

Two factors matter most: the number of bathrooms in your home and your local water hardness (measured in ppm or mg/l). A 1-2 bathroom home in a moderately hard area needs a small unit. 3-4 bathrooms or very hard water (300ppm+) needs a mid-range or high-capacity model.

What water hardness level do I have?

Check your postcode at your water supplier's website or use the free postcode checker at check-your-water.co.uk. Under 100ppm is soft, 100-200ppm is moderately hard, 200-300ppm is hard, and above 300ppm is very hard. Most of southern and eastern England is 200-400ppm.

Will a small water softener work for a big house?

Not well. An undersized unit regenerates too often, wasting salt and water while delivering inconsistent softness. It also shortens the resin lifespan. It is always better to size up rather than down — the running cost difference is minimal.

Do I need a twin-tank softener?

Twin-tank (or duplex) softeners provide continuous soft water because one tank regenerates while the other stays active. They are worth the extra cost for larger households (4+ people) or homes where water usage peaks at predictable times, like mornings.

Does the physical size of the softener matter?

Yes — you need space for it. A typical under-sink unit is around 22cm wide, 47cm deep, and 50cm tall. Measure your proposed install location before committing. Utility cupboards, garages, and airing cupboards are popular alternatives to under-sink.
