Understanding water hardness levels

Water hardness is measured in parts per million (ppm). Here is what the numbers mean for your home.

1

Soft (0–100ppm)

Lucky you — no softener needed. Found in parts of Scotland, Wales, and the North West. Minimal limescale.

2

Moderately hard (100–200ppm)

Some limescale buildup over time. A softener is optional but beneficial for appliance longevity and skin comfort.

3

Hard (200–300ppm)

Noticeable limescale on taps, kettles, and showerheads. A water softener is strongly recommended. Covers most of the Midlands and East Anglia.

4

Very hard (300ppm+)

Heavy limescale. Boiler efficiency drops, pipes fur up, skin and hair feel dry. A softener will make a significant difference. Covers London, the South East, and much of Eastern England.

Hard water questions

Common questions about water hardness in the UK.

How do I check my water hardness?

Enter your postcode on your water supplier’s website or use a free online postcode checker. The result will show your hardness in ppm or mg/l. You can also buy a test strip kit from Amazon for under £5.

What causes hard water?

Hard water forms when rainwater passes through chalk and limestone rock, picking up calcium and magnesium minerals. Areas with these geological formations — most of southern and eastern England — have harder water.

Is hard water bad for you?

Hard water is safe to drink. The health concern is indirect: limescale buildup reduces boiler efficiency, damages appliances, and can irritate sensitive skin. The financial and practical impact is where most people notice it.

Will a water softener fix hard water?

Yes. A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium minerals through ion exchange. Softened water eliminates limescale buildup and makes soap, shampoo, and detergent work more effectively.
